 It’s in Our Name. The Burchell family has a long African History. Dr. William John Burchell traveled by ship to South Africa in 1809 as a botanist where he collected a fair amount of plant species to be taken back to England to be studied. While he was in Africa, he named and described many animals. Some of the most common are; Burchell Zebra, Burchells Coucal, Burchells Sandgrouse, Black Footed Cat, White Rhino, and the African Wild Dog. William returned to England, presented his work, and moved back to Africa with his family in 1819 just before the British settlers came in 1820. Although he himself did not have any children, Barry’s descendent is William’s brother. Barry is the 7th generation Burchell to be born in South Africa and his sons are the 8th generation African Burchells.
